Company description
With over 90 years in the business, you can trust Desser time and again. Desser is much more than just a cane furniture specialist. We’re also a family-run cane furniture specialist. We’re proud of our history, and we’re always happy to share the story behind our business. It all started during the First World War, when Issac Desser was posted on the front line in Belgium. While bravely defending his country, Issac met the Flemish craftsmen that would later inspire him to set up the Desser everyone knows and loves today. Humble beginnings Once the war ended, Issac returned to England and started importing beautifully handcrafted Flemish wicker baskets, selling them in retail outlets across Britain.
The original business was run from Isaac's mother-in-law's terraced house in Whitfield Street, Manchester, with the whole family pitching in to help out. An official start In 1919, Issac and his wife, Annie, moved to Cheetham Hill Road and Simon, Issac’s brother, joined the business venture. It was then that the business was given the name ‘Desser and Company’. Onwards and upwards Eventually, Desser expanded to an office in Robert Street, and in 1932 Issac’s son, Morris, joined the company. When young secretary Miriam Marcus came on board as well, Morris was instantly in love and the two were soon married. In the late thirties, Desser moved twice more, first to Lyon Street and then to Lord Street.
Then, after the Second World War, Simon’s son-in-law, Ronnie Stewart, joined the business. Sadly, Simon passed away shortly after. Importing from behind the Iron Curtain During the Cold War, Desser continued to provide the British public with stunning rattan furniture from all over the world, including locations behind the Iron Curtain. Thanks to the business’ unprecedented growth, Morris Desser began taking business trips across the world, to Western and Eastern Europe, Asia, and many other locations.
